Need for Practical Education

There is no doubt that India is a mini world. We have very high mountains on one side and very deep valleys on the other sides. Extreme cold in some regions like Kashmir and extreme heat in areas like Rajasthan, Heavy rains in areas like Cherapunji and very scanty rainfall in the Thar desert, Very high day temperatures in some regions and very low temperatures during the night. People searching a drop of water in some regions to quench their thirst and some areas flooded with excess water. Not only geographically India is a mini world, even in terms of man made societies, tremendous differences can be seen in India. Every 12 miles the language tone changes, almost every state has different language, traditions, culture, dressing sense, food habits and so on. This is called as India’s Unity in Diversity. Nothing is uniform all over. Not only now, even centuries before, the one who tried to bring uniformity never succeeded and the one who respected the diversity always ruled India be it the Sultans, Mughals, Britishers and so on. The one who tried to disrespect the fundamental of Unity in Diversity had been shown the doors and why not?. Who has the habit of eating the same food everyday or wearing the same clothes every day? Even the poorest of the poor will think of a change inspite his pockets not permitting him. Unless and until there is no change, differences and diversity how will the best be carved out. Even nature has different moods, like seasons, temperatures, cyclones and so on and the one who accepts the change and challenge can only survive properly.
When nature and the long persisting human societies have respected this concept then how our today’s educationists are adopting the same policy of education all over India particularly the Playschool Industry. Even the Indian Constitution has respected the Unity in Diversity concept and has allowed State boards to function and operate at state levels, keeping in view the state standards and uniformity.
As the base of any building is built before erecting the entire building in the same way the fundas and fundamentals of every child are inbuilt in the very initial years. As we cannot make any major change in the building mainframe, once the building is built else it will collapse in the same way to remould kids after certain years is almost impossible.
Being into the noblest profession, I think every educationist should understand the fundamentals beyond business and design playschool curriculum as per the local needs. It’s really vague as to why the educationist stress on international curriculum rather than first equipping the child with his environment.
This sounds something like what my school teacher, when I was in class sixth had told. An agriculture university gold medalist was searching for a bride. Since he was a gold medalist his parent’s happiness knew no bounds. Where ever they went had nothing but to praise their child. And why not, after all their child had studied nights together to achieve the gold medal. When his fame starting spreading in nearby areas, a landowner, searching a groom for his daughter sent his daughter’s proposal to the boy. After few meetings it was agreed upon that the boy will visit the groom’s village so that all the family members and well wishers will see him. When the boy came, everybody was happy to see the young and charming boy. The landlord was full with pride to choose such a fine son-in-law. He thought to show his farms sprawling in acres in various parts of the village territory. It was groundnut season and one of the landlord’s servants took the boy to visit the farms. Since the fields were very far and there were no means of communication to that field they started on foot. The servant, who knew nothing about the degree and gold medal, only knew that the boy is a very learned man in the field of agriculture. So the discussion started orally and whatever was asked the boy answered. After some time when they entered the fields, the servant said that his owner farms starts from here and ends till the horizon. They went on walking. By now the boy was tired and thirsty and could not bear the heat. He lost his patience and asked the servant not to show any fields and rather just show the groundnut field for which they had come. The servant was dubious. He raised his brows and said that after this grass fields we will enter the ground nut fields. They went on walking and the boy lost his cool over the servant. He again asked for the nut fields. The servant very politely said that they are walking through the nut fields since beginning. The boy looked down and asked where the nuts are? There are no nuts on the plants. The servant bent down and pulled some small plants out of the soil and showed him the nuts. And the story continues.
What I want to highlight here is let’s not design a curriculum which is not having a local touch and in fact is more lucrative to International standards which has a very less role to play in our daily life compared to the local. It’s useless to teach kids what a kiwi fruit is if he is not aware of the fruits available in the local market which he sees daily. I assume 90% kids live their 90% school life in their own neighborhood and almost 90% brain has been developed by this time. Then why make him a stranger in his own home?
